Let’s get the terms straight

The technical term for energy wood is woody biomass.

Biomass is defined as any material that derives from living organisms such as plants and animals, and it comes in two forms: dry woody biomass, which is mostly used in thermal or thermochemical processes (combustion, gasification), and moist biomass with a low wood content (such as manure, agricultural residues and biogenic waste), which is more likely to be used in fermentation processes.

85% of Swiss biomass is of the woody variety which in turn is almost exclusively (94%) used to produce heat rather than electricity. When officials speak of “biomass”, they are mostly referring to wood and not to cow manure or food and agricultural waste.

Remember too that biomass constitutes Switzerland’s second most important “renewable”. And it is set to play an even more major role in the country’s energy mix.

Which means a lot more trees will be burnt.
